Using CO2 for cannabis growth

CO2 is an essential gas in our atmosphere. It is necessary for plant life, as it uses the energy from sunlight to synthesize carbohydrates from carbon dioxide in a process called “photosynthesis,” which is necessary for plants to grow.

In a greenhouse, there is a limited amount of CO2 and the growing lights use it up quickly, leaving little for the plants. You can use bulk CO2 to create an atmosphere closely mimicking the outdoors. Using higher levels of CO2 can help you grow cannabis plants that are stronger and generate a higher yield. This helps you minimize loss while maximizing profits.

Proper levels of CO2 also help prevent and treat problems caused by mold or pests and allow your greenhouse to reach a higher temperature, which encourages strong growth of your cannabis plants.

The general recommendation is to maintain CO2 levels of between 1,200 and 2,000 parts-per-million (PPM). By using fans to circulate the CO2 around the growing space, you’ll maximize its benefits while minimizing risk of overuse.

Why should I use a CO2 cannabis extraction machine?

In addition to marijuana for medical or recreational use, there are other elements of the legal cannabis business here in New York. Those elements start with cannabis extraction, the products from which account for more than 50% of cannabis sales.

Cannabis extraction is the conversion of raw materials in the cannabis plant — such as CBD, THC and cannabinoids — into a useable form. It is a multistep process. The first is primary extraction, where the cannabinoids and terpenes are separated from unwanted plant matter. The next steps involve refining and purifying the extracted materials.

The products made from cannabis extraction, also known as concentrates, include CBD oil tinctures and capsules, lotions, skin care products, gummies and pet products.

CO2 offers advantages over other methods for cannabis extraction.

It is more cost-effective. You aren’t using compressed flammable gases such as butane or propane, so you do not incur extra facility costs. You don’t need additional distillation or purging as you do when you use butane, propane or other materials such as ethanol or alcohol mixtures. Finally, yields tend to be higher using CO2 than other fuels.

The CO2 bubbles away once the extraction is done, leaving nothing behind. Because no solvents are used, your product is purer and cleaner. CO2 extraction is performed at temperatures more native to the cannabis plant, whereas other methods use more heat. With CO2, thermal degradation to both the plant and the end product is dramatically minimized.

Using CO2 is more environmentally friendly than other methods because CO2. The Federal Drug Administration has approved CO2 as safe for industrial extractions. Using CO2 for extractions kills microbial bacteria, molds and mildew. Both will give you an advantage as you can market your product as superior to that of your competitors’.
